S. M. Ballard Western Author

The final installment of S. M. Ballard's Doc Holliday trilogy, Death Takes a Holliday.
When John Henry "Doc" Holliday died at age thirty-six in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, he left behind more than a reputation. He left a son. Would the boy live down the lies or live up to the legend?
Death Takes a Holliday traces Henry McKey Holliday's transition from unsure youth to confident, accomplished adult in the turbulent Arizona Territory of the waning years of the 19th century. Henry is a young man locked in an ongoing quest for self and past while making his future in a changing world.
At nineteen, Henry enlists in the First United States Volunteer Cavalry landing in Cuba as a member of the legendary Rough Riders. He counts among his contemporaries future president Theodore Roosevelt, General Leonard Wood, William Owen "Buckey" O'Neill, and novelist/war correspondent, Stephen Crane.
In Cuba Henry is reunited with acquaintances of his father's, Sherman McMasters and Tombstone surgeon George Goodfellow, as well as a man from Henry's past he does not remember, but will be unable to forget, Sergeant Major Hayworth McClean of the 10th Cavalry.
Henry returns home to Arizona recovering from wounds and mourning the death of childhood friend, Cooper Street. A powerful will and the love of Cooper's former fiancée, Creek Johnson's daughter Victoria, helps Henry turn his life around.
Life is good. Henry is married with a family, but a violent incident changes everything. Rustlers murder three McKey cowboys, including Texas Jack Vermillion.
Devastated by the loss, Henry turns to the county sheriff in his quest for justice, but the lawman can do little. Henry then looks to the Arizona Rangers, knowing their authority crosses boundaries and their tenacity, even so early in their forming, is legendary.
With his life in chaos, Henry McKey Holliday's sense of balance is reborn with the appearance of trusted friend, Hayworth McClean. The future is out there, waiting. What it holds is up to him. As Doc Holliday's son, will he live up to the myth or become a legend unto himself?
